Pantheism is the theological belief that God and His creation are not different in substance but that all is one, creation and Creator, so that to revere what exists is akin to worshipping God. The word Pantheism derives from the Greek words pan ("all") and theos ("God"). Thus, pantheism means: All is God. In essence, pantheism holds that if anything at all is worthy of the kind of reverence usually given to gods, it is the Universe as a whole and Nature. Pantheistic beliefs are compatible with Taoism, Zen Buddhism, and Paganism. Pantheists take the universe and nature as their starting point, not the idea of the Christian's personal God. They feel a profound reverence and awe for these, like the reverence and awe that believers in a more conventional God feel towards their deity, but without the humble worship or the belief that it has a mind or personality that we can influence through prayer. Natural pantheism reveres and cares for nature, accepts this life as our only life, and this earth as our only paradise, if we do our best to take care of it.
Why Pantheism? Pantheism does not require faith in miracles. It accepts and affirms life joyously, as something to be 'celebrated' with no worry of offending a personal God. It does not regard this life as a probationary period on the way to a better existence or a 'heavenly home' after death. It teaches reverence and love for nature. Nature was not created for us to use or abuse - 'Nature created us', and thus, we are an inseparable part of her, and we have a duty of care towards her. Thus, we see the Environmental Movement as part of the New Age Pantheist Movement.
